It's stiff but she uses the foot OK. It seems to give a bit of a problem if she has to climb small diameter things (like cage bars) for I think the amount of "squeeze" that has to be applied pulls that toe. All the white skin is where the flesh was most mangled. As crushed as that tip of her toe was I doubt that she will ever have flexibility in it (if she keeps it), there was simply no hope of lining the bone up appropriately. I have more hope of her keeping the toe because the evidence of the "nail ick" and the fact that the toe continues to be of normal temperature all the way to the end is promising. They will usually show signs of degeneration by the 4th week. The nail may of even been able to be saved if I had a way I would of been able to keep it cut back but there was no way to do that w/o further compromising it. The nail growth has caused the nail to have too much pressure/lift applied for the tenuous hold that was left.

No, I will not pull the nail because the tendon is still attached and it could do more harm than good. I have to allow the body to naturally restrict and and eliminate the attachment to the nail.

I've often wondered if AR had gotten her toe broken like that, but since at this point it would only be speculation, we let it go. We do keep that nail just a bit shorter so it doesn't interfere with her daily activities, and she deos fine.

What does Lib think about that? Is she okay?

There aren't any next steps. What's done is done. There is not a nail bed left that I can see ... the toe just kept puckering until it severed off all attachments. I was actually glad to see it gone because when it was super loose but still attached I worried about it getting caught and ripping off doing further damage. The last of the photo diary.

Its look real good, i am glad bird made it through without infection. You have patience, i would have cut it and cauterized it.

I'm a firm believer in allowing the body to heal itself when possible w/ close supervision. Cauterizing in itself, IMO, that sets the healing process backwards. I can understand it for someone who is gone thru the day wanting to do something for fear of something ripping and bleeding profusely but I'm available to my birds almost all of the time. As you see Lib's body knew how to take care of it and it appeared to do so in a pain free way (the nail loss not the crushed toe).

That's the beauty of allowing the body to "strangle off" the dead nail.

The toe looks fantastic! You did exactly the right things, and left all of us a good "how to" if it ever happens to us. I really can't get over how good it looks, and how quickly it healed. I bet Libby is really happy to have it feeling better now too, and not have to worry about more bandage changes, etc. Now she can get back down to the business of enjoying life.

I haven't been around much lately & I must say, from the last photos I saw about Lib's toe to your last posted image, WOW! Looks so very nice. & I hope Miss Lib is as perky as ever. She did a great job healing herself, with much love, care & attention from her Mom. :appl

Miss J came to me with a toenail missing. Her former Mom said she couldn't remember what happened & could have been a cage door pinch, but there's only a nail "stub" at the end of the toe & that's it. It's never come back. Her other talons make up for it tho.

Budgie
Old topic, but I must say that this is very informative. I have a lovebird and, at his previous home, there were two budgies. He once caused a budgie's foot to bleed. I also have a budgie here with me and I was thinking that they were getting along quite nicely. I've let them out two or three times together (I'm always in the room to supervise or intervene, if they get into anything.) Paulie hasn't done anything to make Meme bleed, but it just takes one time. I'll be a lot more cautious with them and I don't believe I'll be letting them out together anytime soon!

I'm glad that you were able to take care of Lib's foot so well. (:

Matanimat, I'm glad you found it informative. While I'd rather not have had it happen being it did I felt sharing it could be of some value to someone one day.
